Born in New Orleans on July 8, 1929, Shirley Ann Grau attended the Booth School in Montgomery, Alabama, and in 1950 graduated from Newcomb College, Tulane University, in New Orleans. She remained at Tulane for an additional year of graduate study in English literature. Her first published story appeared in New World Writing in 1953, and in 1955 she published a collection entitled The Black Prince, and other Stories, which received considerable critical attention. The Hard Blue Sky, 1958, her first novel, challenged readers with its setting in an exotic community on a Louisiana coastal island and with its near absence of plot. The treatment of character, and the lyrical quality of the writing itself, accounted for the novel╒s great interest. In The House on Coliseum Street, 1961, The Keepers of the House, which won a Pulitzer Prize, 1964, The Condor Passes, 1971, and Evidence of Love, 1977, she continued to explore the inner recesses of characters cut off, whether by poverty, geography, race, or other circumstances, from their fellow men. She also continued to publish short stories in the New Yorker, Saturday Evening Post, Atlantic Monthly, Mademoiselle, and other magazines, some of which were collected in The Wind Shifting West, 1973. Nine Women, a collection of short stories, was published in 1986.
